Disease surveillance go online
Routine H399 (Weekly Return of Communicable Diseases) based disease
surveillance system has been the driving hub for Sri Lankan communicable
disease surveillance system for the last few decades. It has been evolved over
many years and proven that it can be adopted to ever changing epidemiology of
communicable diseases in the country.
To give the information technology touch, a complementary web based
software application has been developed and named as Nivarana (www.nivarana.lk) based on
the same principles of paper based disease surveillance system while taking
steps to improve the quality and timeliness of data. The Epidemiology Unit
hopes to replace the paper based system with this system when it is implemented
throughout the country.
Prior to launch of this
application, it has been demonstrated before the Hon. Minister of Health,
Director General of Health Services and other high ranking ministry, provincial
and regional health officials at the recently concluded HDC meeting held on
23rd June 2011

RE Review held on 2023-01-19
The Epidemiology Unit of Sri Lanka conducted Regional
Epidemiologist’s review on January 19th and 20th of 2023 at the Hotel
Goldy Sands in Negombo. The purpose of the review was to assess the current
state of the epidemiology landscape in the region and identify areas for
improvement. The review brought together leading epidemiologists from all districts of the
country to exchange ideas,
share best practices and collaborate on strategies to tackle public health
challenges. The outcome of the review will help shape the direction of the
epidemiology field in Sri Lanka for years to come
Hepatitis B survey
The Epidemiology unit, Ministry of Health
carried out a prevalence survey for Hep. B infection among pregnant mothers and
5-year-old children, according to the guidelines set by the WHO. The suvey was
carried out in randomly selected MOH areas in Sri Lanka during October
2022-December 2022
